2019 Glens Falls Foundation Annual Report
For 80 years, the Glens Falls Foundation has provided financial support to non-profit community organizations seeking to improve the quality of life for people living in Warren, Washington and northern Saratoga counties.
In 2019, the Glens Falls Foundation issued more than $300,000 in grants and scholarships. Seventeen local organizations received grants to support health, education, cultural and environmental initiatives, with a particular focus again this year on programs that provide food, shelter and transportation for local children, seniors and families in need. Seventy-three students were awarded scholarships.
The grants were as follows:
$20,000 to The Open Door Mission in Glens Falls for establishment of a men’s shelter and a food pantry;
$15,000 to the Warren-Washington Counties Association of Mental Health for acquisition of a van;
$15,000 to the Salvation Army for the Pathway to Hope program to help individuals and families break the cycle of poverty;
$12,500 to the Canal Street Marketplace in Fort Edward for the development of a community center for the sale of fresh food and locally made products;
$12,000 to the Salem Courthouse Preservation Project to support the summer lunch, learn and play program for children;
$10,000 to the Greater Glens Falls Senior Citizens Center for exterior painting and improvements to its historic Glen Street headquarters;
$10,000 to the Tri-County United Way to support a program to provide food and school supplies in backpacks for local children in need;
$7,250 to the World Awareness Children’s Museum in Glens Falls to support programming for children;
$5,000 to the Conkling Center toward the purchase of a van to transport senior citizens;
$5,000 to Fort Ticonderoga to support educational programs for children;
$5,000 to the North Creek Business Alliance for a van to transport seniors to health care services, meals sites and to buy groceries and to support meals on wheels deliveries;
$3,000 to Comfort Food of Washington County for the creation of a community food center in Greenwich;
$3,000 to the Queensbury Senior Citizens Center to support purchase of a new structure for outdoor summertime events;
$3,000 to Rebuilding Together for emergency home repairs for families in Northern Saratoga County;
$3,000 to the Lake George Music Festival to support performances at the Park Theater, Glens Falls;
$2,500 to St. Anne’s Institute for counseling sessions for uninsured children and families, and
$1,000 to the Historical Society of Moreau and South Glens Falls for summer programming for children
In addition, more than $170,000 was provided in scholarships to 73 students attending institutions of higher learning and pursuing degrees in medicine, nursing, and various liberal arts programs.
The Foundation does not conduct fund drives. Its financial resources derive from tax- deductible charitable contributions, memorial gifts, and bequests. The Foundation's Distribution Committee reviews grant applications submitted by local charitable organizations, chooses recipients and determines the amounts of the grants. The Committee is made up of community volunteers appointed by local judges and elected officials.
